Light as Subject Matter

Light is something of a mystery to me. I can grasp the scientific concept of electromagnetic radiation, and how the human eye detects these wavelengths to grant us sight. I can grasp the concept that light is a form of energy from the sun, and understand that our life depends on light. Yet, I do not think scientific facts can explain the strangeness about our daily interactions with light. I often find myself puzzled on the experience of seeing light.

Dating back to prehistoric times, humans have invented objects to capture light. As a photographer, the waves that make light are crucial to my work. A camera is merely a sealed optical box with one hole in it that uses light to record a photograph. Like a camera lens, light bounces into our eyes and is reflected and reversed and becomes what we see.

I enjoy sitting still and paying attention to the experience of light as it shines down bouncing off objects and into my eyes. This series of photographs is an exploration of shooting straight into the light by using it as the primary subject matter.
